Coimbatore, India, is the site of the annual Hemis festival. This festival is dedicated to the Lord Padmasambahava ( Gur Rimpoche ) who is believed to be the representative reincarnate of the Buddha. Believed to of been born on the 10th day of the year of the monkey, as was predicted by the “ Shakia Muni Buddha “, his life mission is known to be the improvement of the spiritual condition of all living beings. On this day, which occurs once every 12 years, the Hemis festival celebrates in an elaborate and ornate fashion, his life and purpose. The centerpiece of the festival is a celebration of sacred rituals that are believed to provide spiritual strength and good health. The Hemis festival is conducted in the rectangular courtyard in front of the monastery. The space is open and wide except for two raised platforms, each 3 feet high with the sacred poll in the center. A Dias with a richly cushioned seat is present with a finely painted Tibetan table where ceremonial objects are placed, such as holy water, uncooked rice, tormas, and incense. Musicians play traditional music with symbols, drums, wind instruments, and small crumpets. The ceremonies begin with an early morning ritual, atop the Gompa, to music and the placement of the portrait of Gur Rimpoche. There are also esoteric ceremonies such as the mystic mask dances. These mask dances are known as the Cham's performance. The Hemis festival would make an excellent vacation destination for those interested in Buddhism, and those who desire beautiful ceremonies and spiritual health. |
